Fabricated Layla

It was while I was at university studying Textile Design, mainly surface pattern design, that I began to work with computer aided design. Before this I hadn’t had much interest or understanding of working within digital design. I felt like I had to force myself to learn Photoshop and Illustrator so that when I eventually finished my degree I would be at least Industry ready. What I wasn’t prepared for was that I would eventually fall head over heels in love with this new found design platform; the more I learned the more creative opportunities I found.

This was the beginning of Fabricatedlayla. While I was learning and building my digital art skill set I also started to listen to a lot of Reggae music. I have always had a great love for all things music; playing music while I work is like a meditation for me.

My love of reggae music led me to attend dances, carnivals, festivals, sound system gatherings; the whole ethos and culture of the genre enthralled me.

From the music, those who played old crackly records were my favourite, to the MC’s buoying up the crowd and the big sound system speaker boxes with the bass turned to soul-shaking loud. I started to collect records, I bought a record player, the love of the culture started to seep into my work.

And here I am today!

Within my work I have created a lot of event posters, T-Shirt designs, book covers, and my own Fabricatedlayla posters which I sell on my online shop.

In 2020 I also bit the bullet and decided to commission my own SoundSystem Likkle Warrior Hi-Fi which I run with my good friend Ras Iyasu. This has been a long time dream and combining my love of music with my artwork I feel I have nearly come full circle, although I have lots of new music and art projects on the horizon.
