BAND OF JAYS
Band of Jays are a whimsical, acoustic-led folk and experimental trio rooted in Huddersfield. Comprising of vocalist Jade Harris, and multi-instrumentalists and accompanying vocalists Chris Ruffoni and Sam Hodgson, the group became beloved across the region (and beyond) for their intriguing, story-driven song-writing and unique vocal chemistry.
Their music delivers an intriguing blend of avant-garde song-writing techniques and luscious, three-part vocal harmonies, anchored by intricately layered acoustic guitar, bass, and delicate percussion. Stylistically, Band of Jays has never shied away from the unconventional – crafting narrative-rich tracks about people transforming into birds, alien communication, and other unexpected wonders.
During their active years, the trio developed a reputation for an interactive, playful performance style, choosing to move away from traditional gig venues in favour of highly unusual spaces. Over their career, they brought their music to narrowboats, libraries, meditation centres, farmyards, a moving truck, and even a milk float – capturing an organic, intimate connection with their listeners wherever they set up.
Though Band Of Jays stepped away from live performances some years ago, their album remains a brilliant capsule of northern indie-folk creativity, marked by super-slick musicianship and heart-warming charm.
